Deliberate diversity: UWC Robert Bosch College in Freiburg
UWC Robert Bosch College in Freiburg is a boarding school for 200 students aged 16-19. Young people from around 90 countries live together in house communities for two years and graduate from the College with the IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma. They learn that change is possible – through open and honest discourse, courageous action and a sense of community.
Living and learning with 200 students from 90 countries
As a project of UWC Germany and the Robert Bosch Foundation, UWC Robert Bosch College (RBC) opened its doors in September 2014. The school is founded on the principle of deliberate diversity: young people from all over the world and all social classes live and learn together at this school for two years and deal with central issues of humanity. RBC places particular emphasis on education for peace and sustainability. At our school, 65% of students receive a full scholarship, with a further 30% receiving partial scholarships. This is made possible by a circle of sponsors and donors, including the state of Baden-Württemberg, the city of Freiburg, companies including B.Braun Melsungen AG and other foundations and private individuals.

Impressions of UWC Robert Bosch College
History
UWC Germany and the Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH launched the RBC project to mark the 150th anniversary of Robert Bosch’s birth. The former Carthusian monastery in Freiburg, a historic monument, was restored and converted into a school by the end of 2014. The Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Robert Bosch GmbH provided 45 million euros for this purpose.

UWC Robert Bosch College bears the name of a great German entrepreneur and philanthropist of the early 20th century. His example as a responsible citizen still shapes the work of the Robert Bosch Foundation today. International understanding is practiced at all of the 18 United Word Colleges. Since the first UWC was founded in 1962, the schools have aimed to educate young people to become tolerant and responsible individuals – convictions also held by Robert Bosch (1861 – 1942). He shared many of these convictions with Kurt Hahn, the reform pedagogue and spiritual father of the UWC movement, with whom he maintained a special relationship.
