Responsibility as Mindset
Few words in education are used as frequently —and meant as rarely—as responsibility. It is often treated as a synonym for duty. Yet while duty is imposed from the outside and fulfilled accordingly, responsibility comes from within. As the word itself suggests, it asks us to respond. And anyone who responds for themselves may be wrong, misunderstood, or fail. Duty shields us from that risk. Responsibility exposes us to it.
In an increasingly unsettled world, this is far more than an academic distinction. As uncertainty grows, so too does the desire for clarity—for rules and obligations that tell us what to do. Yet the defining challenges young people face today—climate change, geopolitical conflict, navigating difference and polarization—come with no ready-made answers. They require people who are willing and able to respond, even without the certainty that their response will prove to be the right one.
This is precisely where UWC Robert Bosch College stands out as an educational institution: genuine responsibility lies at the heart of its mission. Anyone living alongside people from more than 90 countries, each with profoundly different experiences, beliefs, and life stories, is challenged every day—and cannot choose not to respond. This is true for our students, who learn to embrace difference while still taking a stand. It is true for our teachers and staff, whose responsibilities extend far beyond the transmission of knowledge. And it is true for our leadership team, who must create and sustain a space in which these encounters can flourish.
Kurt Hahn, the founder of the United World Colleges movement, captured this idea in a powerful image: young people should be “crew, not passengers.” By this he meant: give them responsibilities whose careless execution has real consequences. Not simulated responsibility, but genuine responsibility. Because only those who are allowed to fail are truly able to respond.
In my first year as Chair of the College Board, I have had the privilege of witnessing how courageously—and how naturally—this spirit of responsibility is lived at UWC Robert Bosch College. Leading a college like this is not becoming easier in today’s world; it is becoming more demanding and more complex. The clarity and dedication with which our leadership team and staff embrace this responsibility, and continue to find new answers even in the College’s twelfth year, deserve the highest recognition and my sincere gratitude.
These are not answers we find alone. UWC Robert Bosch College is sustained by a wide circle of people who feel deeply connected to it: supporters, friends, partners, and sponsors who choose to take responsibility alongside us. In an increasingly uncertain world, their role is not becoming smaller, but more important than ever. My heartfelt thanks go to each and every one of you for your generosity, your continued commitment, and the trust you place in UWC Robert Bosch College.
