Unheard-of Worlds of Sound: The Freiburg Accordion Orchestra at the Kartause

From Mozart to Piazzolla: A Concert Spanning Classical, Modern, and Experimental Music

Just how versatile can an accordion orchestra sound? The Freiburg Accordion Orchestra demonstrates that the instrument has far more to offer than one might expect. On January 30, the concert orchestra of the First Freiburg Accordion Club will bring its musical diversity to UWC Robert Bosch College—with a repertoire that blends different eras and styles.

Founded in 1928, the ensemble is one of Germany’s most time-honored accordion orchestras. Under the musical direction of Volker Rausenberger, it combines musical openness with high artistic standards. The ensemble’s mission is not only to preserve the tradition of the accordion but also to explore new musical paths and bring previously unheard works to life.

The repertoire spans a wide range of eras and styles: Composers such as Mozart and John Cage, Béla Bartók, and Astor Piazzolla exemplify the orchestra’s musical diversity. Through changing instrumentations and collaboration with other instruments, new soundscapes continually emerge, demonstrating just how multifaceted and surprising an accordion orchestra can sound.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Before the concert begins, our students will be offering short campus tours starting at 7:00 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

The evening is part of the “Kultur in der Kartause” event series and combines music, social interaction, and the international character of UWC Robert Bosch College. We look forward to discovering new worlds of sound together with our guests and bringing people together at the historic Kartause.

Admission is free. UWC Robert Bosch College welcomes donations to its scholarship campaign, which aims to provide a young person from the Freiburg region who has experienced displacement with access to an international education.
