Charity Concert Series “Kultur in der Kartause” at UWC Robert Bosch College

Starting the year with jazz: Kultur in der Kartause in January

On Saturday, January 31, 2026, the Charity Concert Series at UWC Robert Bosch College will welcome the new year together with Freiburg’s Jazzhaus Youth Orchestra (JJO) and The Large Ensemble MSJ (LENS) of the Musikschule Jazz Basel. LENS currently has a focus on compositions by teachers at the music school, which have been arranged especially for this ensemble including Clara Vetter, Charlotte Lang, Jaro Milko, André Buser, David Cogliatti, Fabio Gouvea and Sebastiàn Greschuk. The ensemble consists of students from the jazz talent promotion class and the PreCollege programme of the Basel Music Academy, supplemented by young musicians from other fields. under the direction of Freiburg Trumpeter Jonas Winterhalter.

JJO (Jazzhaus Jugendorchester) are fresh from a memorable tour to the UK in November, including performances at London’s Vortex Jazz Club. Led by British Pianist and composer Will Bartlett, they will play new arrangements of South African Jazz songs as well as music from contemporary composers including the NDR Big Band’s Nikki Iles. The two bands have collaborated since 2023 and represent the best in young jazz musicians in Freiburg and Basel, two great and closely-connected musical cities.

The concert is free of charge, donations are welcome. All proceeds go towards the Kultur in der Kartause scholarship, which enables a young person to take part in our school program.

The concert starts at 8 pm. From 7 pm, there will be an opportunity to get to know the school grounds around the former Carthusian monastery during short guided tours with UWC students. Homemade snacks and drinks will be available in the foyer of the auditorium, also from 7 pm.
