Our students are involved in the monitoring process of collecting the data we need to estimate our greenhouse gas emissions and environmental footprint, for example by reporting energy consumption and waste production for their student houses on a weekly basis. One of the main goals of our educational concept is educate and empower our students to become change makers: young adults who are excited about tackling one of the many problems that our world is facing today. As part of their education there, we introduce our students to a problem solving methodology on our Sustainability Special Focus Day challenging them to develop concrete solutions to environmental issues here on our campus, such as plastic or paper waste.

A joint project: the work in the School Garden is coordinated by gardener and pedagogue Eva-Maria Schüle, who is supported by UWC students and Freiburg volunteers.

School Garden Initiative: “Gardening Makes a School”

In fall 2016, the UWC Robert Bosch College monastery garden was officially recognized by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Protection in Baden-Württemberg. Of the 153 schools to apply for the Schulgarteninitiative 2015/16, our garden was one of several to receive the highest possible ranking and has been designated as an exemplary school garden. The school garden received an excellent rating again in the 2019 competition, alongside a special price in form of raised beds for flowers and plants.
